Jean-François Gossiaux is ethnologist, specialist of Balkans. He is research director in the School of High Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, manager of the interdisciplinary Institute of Anthropology of the Contemporary (IIAC, CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) / EHESS), member of the Laboratory of Anthropology of Institutions and the Social Organizations (LAIOS). He performs researches on Balkans since more than twenty years. His researches first concerned the family organization ("The domestic group in rural Yugoslavia", 1982, a doctoral dissertation), then the phenomena of ethnicité and nationalism ("Ethnic powers in Balkans", 2002).

Since twenty years , Jean-François Gossiaux performs researches in Balkans, notably concerning the family organization, ethnicity, relations with power. By leaning on the example of Arumanian Valachians, he analysed the construction of a transnational ethnicism- the model which appears adapted to the new organization of the European space.
