Zadruga: domestic democracy  In this extract Jean-François Gossiaux presents zadruga. Zadruga is an important traditional domestic group, a sprawling rural family, a family community where several families live together. The leader is chosen by the whole community for his quality to aim the family. Property is common in zadruga.  00:04:44
Zadruga in history  In this extract Jean-François Gossiaux speaks about the historical aspect of zadruga. In literature zadruga is an ideal family type. Now there is no more ideal type big zadrugas, but it still exists in the classical form at Kosovo Albanians. Zadruga is not similar to radical family of the south of France because in zadruga there is no absolute authority of the father. According to a hypothesis, preservation of zadruga is owed to Ottoman occupation.  00:09:53
Zadruga of today  Jean-François Gossiaux explains the actual state of zadruga. Communist socialist cooperatives created to replace zadrugas disappeared in the seventies. But the form of domestic organization founded on several families still goes on.  00:02:28
Zadruga as a model of democracy  Here, Jean-François Gossiaux speaks about an important feature of zadruga - democracy. A zadruga family is not a patriarchal family. It could be considered as an ideal type of social organisation.  00:02:38
Economic crisis and rise of nationalism in Yugoslavia  From the middle of the 80s a rise of nationalism was observed in Yugoslavia. This nationalism existed already in the 70s but not in critical form. From the 80s economic crisis in Yugoslavia was interpreted and lived as crisis between nationalities, ethnic groups. The problem of Kosovo began settling sharply. But it’s the serbo-croatian conflict and not Kosovo which triggers off the dislocation of the Confederation.  00:07:38
Correspondence between territories and nationalities  In ex-Yugoslavia, the Republic Confederation did not correspond to people confederation. Apart Croatia and Serbia, there was not coincidence between territories and people in Yugoslavia. The definition of religion, assimilation of religion to the assimilation of the people created conflicts.  00:05:23
Criteria of identification  According to Gossiaux, principal criteria of the peoples/nationalities definition of ex-Yugoslavia are the language and the religious autodefinition. The orthodox churches are national churches there. There is an assimilation, a parallelism between the church and the nation since Ottoman Empire, building of nations in XIX s.  00:04:30
Yugoslavian identity  In this extract Jean-François Gossiaux speaks about the appearance of the idea of Yougoslavia. The idea of Yugoslavia was born in austro-Hungarian empire during south Slavonic nationalism movement. The State of Yugoslavia finally did not succeed because, on one hand, there was a rival Croatian nationalism and, on the other hand, the principle of equality between the peoples was not respected there, because in reality it was the dynasty of Serbians.  00:11:35
Space repartition of populations in Balkans  Even not officially, a space separation exists between the Macedonians and Albanians in Macedonia. A reform realised under international duress (a new repartition of the basic territorial units corresponding to ethnic implantations, more important decentralization of power) led to the de facto cantonisation of Macedonia. Macedonian State as such is an invention. Because both communities live separately. Albanian also achieved the status of official language. State language stays Macedonian.  00:05:31
