 Persecution of the Bohemians |
 Pavel Himl speaks about the persecution of the gypsies in XVIII c. Studies on the gypsies are led in Czech Republic only since some years. Number of researchers tried to quantify these persecutions according to the written administrative sources. In the 20's of XVIII c ., there was a wave of persecution of the gypsies. About 183 gypsies condemned to death had been counted. The State interference charged authorities to persecute the gypsies. In sources they do not find the description of the gypsies. The gypsies with the vagabonds were considered to be a danger for the society. However there was examples of the gypsies which had become sedentary. In these cases, it is the seigneur which made decision that these persons will not any more be considered as gypsies.

 Pavel Himl reveals from the proceedings of the cross-examinations of the gypsies the landmarks of identification of the gypsies by the judges. These criteria were based on assumptions and stereotypes: opposition between "us" and "you", the origin of the gypsies (provenance of " Small Egypt "), linguistic criterion (Romance "bohemian " language), religious criterion (not out of necessity christian, use of magic).
