Philippe Descola is anthropologist. His work focuses on the socialization modes of nature from which he draws a comparative anthropological analysis. His research in the field took him to Amazonia where he observed the Jivaros Achuar tribe. In June 2000 he obtained the chair of Anthropology of Nature at the Collège de France. In June 1996, Philippe Descola was awarded the silver medal from the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) for his work on the uses and knowledge of nature within tribal societies.
